A stone floor handover should connect the approved material and installation system to clear inspection records and care instructions. This checklist focuses on receiving, appearance approval and handover documentation. For pre-installation coordination, use the stone installation planning checklist.
Receive and identify the material
- Match package labels, quantities and product identifiers to the delivery records.
- Photograph packaging condition and record visible damage or discrepancies under the agreed receiving procedure.
- Keep material batches and approved samples identifiable.
- Raise mismatches before cutting or installation, following the order’s agreed procedure.
A photograph cannot confirm a stone’s exact name, origin or performance. Where those characteristics matter, use the supplier’s confirmed documentation and the relevant test records.
Approve the appearance before setting
Review the proposed layout under suitable lighting with the responsible client or designer. Agree how colour variation, veining, tile orientation, edges and transitions should be arranged. Use an approved sample range or mock-up when one piece cannot represent the full visual variation.
For floors with a pattern, dry-lay or otherwise review the proposed sequence using a method agreed by the installer and designer. Record the approved layout and any areas that require special matching.
Check the installation records
Ask the installer to identify the approved assembly, supporting construction checks, product instructions and inspection hold points. Moisture test results should state their method and units; percentages, relative humidity and emission rates are different measures and must be assessed against the selected system’s requirements.
Do not use a single friction number, water-drop observation or generic curing period to approve a floor. Confirm the material’s intended use, the installation specification and the responsible professional’s acceptance criteria.
Inspect against agreed criteria
| Area | What to record |
|---|---|
| Visual finish | Layout, colour range, orientation, visible chips, scratches and agreed repairs |
| Interfaces | Edges, thresholds, transitions, joints and penetration details |
| Workmanship | The project criteria, measurement method, inspected locations and results |
| Protection and release | Applicable product curing requirements, temporary protection and approval before use |
Where a check suggests a defect, have the installer or project professional investigate it. A hollow sound or surface mark alone does not establish its cause or the appropriate remedy.
Prepare care and handover information
- Identify the installed material and finish.
- Record grout, sealant and any applied treatment, including product instructions.
- Provide the applicable cleaning and maintenance guidance.
- List outstanding work, agreed remedies and responsible contacts.
- Keep approvals, photos and inspection records together for later reference.
Confirm whether a sealer is appropriate for the actual material and installation. Test compatibility as directed by the product manufacturers rather than assuming every stone needs the same treatment.
Resources and material references
For technical installation references, consult the applicable TCNA Handbook and the selected product manufacturers’ instructions through the project professionals. For appearance ideas, see our real stone applications in China; these photos are visual references, not specifications for a new floor.
Discuss stone floor material requirements with your drawings, finish, quantity and destination.
