Kitchen Countertop Buying Guide 2026: Everything You Need to Know

Hey everyone! I’ve been renovating my kitchen lately and spent weeks visiting different stone yards. Today I want to share my experience with you so you don’t make the same mistakes I did.

Comparison of quartz, marble, and granite countertops

My Story – Where I Went Wrong First

When I first started looking, I thought all quartz was basically the same. Wow, was I wrong! Prices ranged from $200 per square meter to over $800. What’s the difference? Let me tell you – the gap is HUGE.

What I Learned After Visiting 10+ Suppliers

1. How to Set Your Budget

Based on my experience:

  • Under $500/sqm: Go for domestic quartz, skip the marble
  • $500-1000/sqm: Good domestic quartz is more than enough
  • Over $1000/sqm: Consider imported quartz or premium marble

2. Which Material Should You Choose?

I chose quartz. Why? Because it’s durable. My previous kitchen had marble, and within a year it got stained by soy sauce. Never again! Quartz is so much easier – just wipe it off.

Don’t get me wrong, marble is beautiful. But if you have kids or cook often, it’s really high maintenance.

3. Thickness Options

Main options are 15mm, 20mm, and 30mm. I went with 20mm – best value for money. 15mm feels too flimsy, 30mm is overkill unless you have extra cash.

5 Tips to Avoid Getting Scammed

  1. Don’t just look at price: If it’s too cheap, there’s always a reason. Either it’s fake granite posing as quartz, or from some shady workshop
  2. Test it in person: Ask for a sample, try scratching it, put some soy sauce on it
  3. Check the quartz content: Good quartz should have 93%+ quartz content
  4. Look at the back: Quality products have smooth backs. Poor quality ones are rough
  5. Get it in writing: Contract should specify brand, thickness, and warranty

2026 Color Trends

After visiting so many showrooms, here are the hot colors this year:

  • White/Greyish White: Matches any style
  • Grey tones: Perfect for modern minimalist
  • With veining: More premium looking than solid colors

My Honest Opinion

For most families, a mid-range domestic quartz is completely sufficient. Don’t feel pressured to overspend!

One last tip: Visit multiple suppliers before buying. Don’t rush!
