Use stone samples to agree appearance and finish before placing an order. A sample is a reference for discussion, not a complete description of every slab or proof of technical performance. Agree how the proposed material and its expected variation will be reviewed and recorded.
Define what you need the sample to show
Tell the supplier the intended use, preferred colour and pattern, surface finish, dimensions and quantity. Ask whether the sample is a general catalogue reference or comes from material proposed for your order.
- A small piece can help compare colour and surface texture.
- Broader slab photos or larger references can help explain pattern scale and variation.
- A fabrication mock-up can help review an edge, joint or detail where required.
- Technical performance needs relevant documentation or testing, not appearance alone.
Choose the sample size, number and approval method with the designer or buyer according to what needs to be evaluated. There is no universal sample count that represents every stone and project.
Discuss availability and charges first
Confirm sample availability, preparation, finish, packing, delivery address, shipping method, charges and estimated timing before arranging dispatch. Ask whether any sample charge is credited against a later order; do not assume it is free or refundable.
Review appearance in the project context
Compare the sample with other specified finishes and under lighting relevant to the intended location. Record its identifier, finish and viewing conditions. Ask for a representative range when colour or veining variation is important.
For selected slabs or patterned work, discuss current slab photos and the proposed layout. Record which material is being approved and how replacements or additional quantities would be reviewed. Do not assume a retained sample guarantees a match for a future order.
Keep appearance checks separate from technical tests
Do not use an informal water-drop, acid or household chemical test as proof of suitability or certification. Ask for the material’s care guidance and any relevant test report. If compatibility with a cleaner, grout, adhesive or treatment needs testing, agree a method with the responsible product manufacturers or laboratory.
For report review, see the quartz slab report checklist.
Record approval and inspection scope
- Sample or material identifier and approved finish.
- Approved appearance range and any exceptions.
- Drawings, dimensions and details still awaiting approval.
- The relationship between the sample and the proposed order.
- Agreed inspection method, responsible parties and discrepancy procedure.
If an independent inspection is needed, agree its scope, sampling, reporting, charges and timing directly before booking. A service name or a generic inspection price does not confirm what will be checked for your shipment.
Request a sample discussion
Browse stone products and application references, then share the design or product link, intended use, finish, quantity and destination. Sample and order arrangements need written confirmation for the selected material.
