So you’re thinking about importing stone directly from China? That’s actually a smart move – I’ve helped hundreds of international buyers do exactly this, and the savings are real. But I’m not going to sugarcoat it: there are some bumps along the road if you don’t know what you’re doing.
Why Bother Buying Direct?
Here’s the thing – every middleman between you and the factory adds their cut. I’ve seen trading companies add 30-50% on top of the factory price. That’s insane when you think about it. You could be getting the same product, same quality, for half the price.
What you actually get when buying direct:
- Prices that make sense (no middleman markup)
- Actually talk to the people making your stone
- Request custom specifications without extra fees
- Real-time updates on your order
Step 1: Find a Legit Factory (Red Flags to Watch)

Here’s where most people mess up. They see a website, maybe some pretty photos, and place an order. Bad idea.
Always verify these:
- Can they show their actual business license?
- Do they have export experience (ask for client references)?
- What certifications do they have?
- Can you do a video call with their production floor?
Real factories are happy to prove themselves. The sketchy ones make excuses.
Step 2: Get Samples – Don’t Skip This!
I cannot stress this enough. Before you order one container, order samples. Yes, it costs $50-100. Yes, it takes time. But it’s nothing compared to receiving a container of wrong material.
When evaluating samples, look for:
- Is the color consistent throughout?
- Any cracks or chips?
- Is the finish smooth and even?
- Does the thickness match what they promised?
The Pricing Thing (Here’s What Actually Matters)
Factories will quote you FOB, CIF, or EXW. Here’s the simple version:
- FOB: They put it on the ship. You handle everything after.
- CIF: They handle shipping to your nearest port. Easier for you.
- EXW: You arrange everything. Cheapest but most work.
My advice? Get CIF quotes and compare. The price difference usually is not huge, and having them handle logistics saves headaches.
Payment – What is Normal?
The standard in the industry is 30-50% deposit, then pay the balance when you get the Bill of Lading. If a factory asks for 100% upfront, that is a red flag.
For your first order, consider using Trade Assurance or a small L/C. It costs more in fees but protects you.
Quality Control – Do not Skip This Step
Before your stone leaves the factory, either:
- Hire a third-party inspection company (worth every penny)
- Or request detailed photos/video of every step
I have seen buyers receive completely different material than what they ordered. Do not be that person.
Shipping Time – Set Realistic Expectations
From production to your door, expect 30-45 days. Things that add time:
- Peak season (March-June, September-November)
- Custom specifications need more time
- Port congestion (check before booking)
Build this into your project timeline. Rushing = mistakes.
Common Mistakes I have Seen
These will cost you money:
- Paying everything before seeing B/L
- Ordering without samples first
- Ignoring certifications (ISO, CE matter)
- Not checking import duties for your country
- Choosing based only on price – quality matters
